Whitman Hanson defeated Newton South 1-0 in the first round of the south sectional tournament. Eve Montgomery scored the game winner in the first half off a fed from Taylor Kofton. From there the defense of Elana Wood, Kelsey Gilbert, Katie Korzec and Katherine O’Kane took over and kept Newton South at bay. Goalkeeper Arianna Comendul made 8 saves in the goal for the shutout. Strong performances were turned in by Alex Fruzzetti, Casey Corr and Lauren Bonavita. Whitman Hanson will face the winner of Walpole and Marshfield.
